Birds taken with the Tamron 150-600mm lens

I went to Sri Lanka to test my Tamron 150-600mm  lens in the wild. In every corner you will find some animal just waiting for its photo opportunity. Like the bird seen above, it was very calm and did not mind getting photographed. The bird is a green bee-eater.

The pictures above are showing a purple Heron, cattle Egrets, Little Cormorant, Grey Heron, Intermediate Egret and a purple Heron flying.

A little purple swamphen is in the picture above.  I was lucky to get a picture of it before it ran away. This was from the Bundala national park, a bird sanctuary.

A fight between 2 males that both wants to have the little island behind them with one female. The birds are called White-breasted Waterhen.

Most of the pictures are not from a national park. These birds can be found in the wild anywhere in Sri Lanka.

Monkeys and elephants – Bundala national park

This month I went abroad. I have visited Sri Lanka in Asia. A great opportunity to see wild animals. All pictures have been taken with the Tamron 150-600mm lens on a Canon 60D. The pictures are taken in Bundala national park.

Above are some pictures of grey langurs. They come in big groups and dont mind if you stop by for a visit. I was pretty close when I saw the monkeys and they were very busy eating leaves.

I will upload some more pictures of birds in another segment. Do not forget to follow this site to keep yourself updated with more news.

Wild animals – using Tamron 150-600 mm

I have been away for awhile and the reason for that is because I went to Sri Lanka to take some nice pictures of wild animals. I went to Yala National Park to see if I could get a glimpse of some leopards. I was lucky to see two. They were up in a tree and there were leaves and branches covering the leopards. So I had to be patient and wait for my moment to take the pictures. That is the challenge when you want to take pictures of animals.  Good thing that I had my Tamron 150-600mm lens with me. Otherwise I would not have gotten these close ups. I also bought a Canon 70D camera body that I used to take these pictures. I will be doing a review of Canon 70D in another segment. I will be uploading some more pictures of some interesting looking birds in the coming post. For now you can enjoy these pictures.

Photo sessions April 2014

Gathered some pictures taken in April of 2014, mostly pictures of birds as that is my main aim right now. All pictures are taken with the Canon 60D and Tamron 150-600mm lens.

Think Tank – Glass Taxi bag

I was looking for a small bag to fit the Tamron 150-600mm mounted to my Canon 60D. I had seen the review with Jared Polin for this bag. He was able to put in lots of pro lenses in that small bag. He was very surprised by how good the bag was and was saying it was light weight. So I thought I have to try the bag to see what the fuss is all about.

I was checking it out in the store and I also had my camera and the Tamron 150-600 mm lens with me to try it out.

First thoughts of this bag was that the lens and the camera fits in the bag! That is a good start.

When the padding came into the picture, the issue started. The shop keeper and I tried to build it up so that you would be able to fit the camera house mounted on the big Tamron 150-600 lens and still have some lenses on the side of  the big lens. That was not easy.

The good thing about Glass Taxi bag is that it has a option where you can choose to only have a big lens in the middle of the bag but then there will be no space for any other lenses. See the picture above to understand what I mean.

As you can see from the picture above you can fit lenses on the side if the big lens is straight. The problem with the Tamron 150-600 mm lens is that it is not straight and that makes it little harder to fit in this bag. The Tamron lens becomes wider in the end of the lens. That puts the camera house in a strange angle in the bag and the padding does not fit then. I am not saying it wont go, but I am saying that the camera bag is not built for the Tamron 150-600m mounted on a camera house.

This is what you can use the bag for:

  • Holds up to a 500mm f/4 lens.
  • Holds a 300mm f/2.8 with DSLR
  • Holds a pro DSLR

Technical Specifications:

  • Interior Dimensions:  8.3” W x 16.3” H x 8” D (21.1 x 41.4 x 20.3 cm)
  • Exterior Dimensions:  8.5” W x 17” H x 9.5” D (21.6 x 43.2 x 24.1 cm)
  • Weight:  2–3.7 lbs (0.9–1.7 kg)

Glass Taxi can be used as a backpack or a shoulder bag. You can attached a monopod or a middle size tripod on the side of the bag. With the speed/skin belt you can attached even more components on the belt, if you want that.

Another thing I noticed with the Think Tank Glass Taxi bag is that the side of the bags are very thin. This means if you happen to drop the bag your lenses and camera equipment can take damage. That is the reason I did not buy the bag. To bad Think Tank, other wise it would have been a nice bag. I am not willing to take a risk with this bag.

It does not matter that the padding in the middle on the inside of the bag is thick because there are no padding on the sides of the bag. This is something Jared Polin forgot to mention when he did his review and praised this bag.

A good advice is to always try out the bag in a store before you buy it. If you order the bag online you will not notice these things until you open the bag and then it might be to big of a hassle to send it back.

The price is right now around 159 US dollars. The pictures are from Think Tank’s site.

Pictures of fire

During earth hour my city arranged for a fire show. It was a nice event and here is some picture from it. The fire performers are called Favilla.

I have not tried to take picture of fire before so this was a good experience to learn which setting that suited me the most. I have used a Canon 60D with a prime lens of 40mm. I have tried different apertures to see which one that suited the most. If you move the mouse over the pictures you will find out the setting that I have used for each picture. It might be useful for you when you want to try to take pictures of fire. The settings worked for me and might work for you too.

What is common with all the pictures is that the pictures where taken without a flash. Most of the pictures are also cropped to remove unnecessary elements that take away the focus from the performers. Some pictures might have a green light because I had my Circular Polaris filter on as I do not have a UV filter for this lens yet. The CPL filter will also have made some effect to the picture even though I did not pay much attention to the filter and did not turn it because I only wanted to test the setting on the camera at this event.

When I took the pictures I choose tungsten in the white balance mode.

All the pictures are taken handheld, no tripod have been used. I love the sparks from the fire in this picture.

Photos for ads

Do you want to sell something? Then take pictures that makes  the item more interesting. It is good to display several pictures rather than just one.

In order to stand out from the ads that are online you have to take special angles of the item you want to sell. Maybe a macro photo on the features that you want to put focus on for the potential buyers.

Lets say we want to sell a electric guitar. Many ads have pictures of the front of the guitar. There might only be one picture and from that you have to form a decision if it is interesting for you or not.

With pictures you get the chance to show off whatever you are selling. In our case you have to give life to a electric guitar and give a full story and make sure to show the guitar in a new perspective. The picture below are close ups to display parts of the guitar. It makes it more interesting and you want to know more about the guitar by just showing some bits of it. You have to create that feeling for the ones checking the ad, keep it interesting and do something new. It will definitely catch someones eye and hopefully lead to someone wanting to buy it.

I found the ad below for a guitar and have written few things that is wrong with it.

It is the guitar you want to sell so put it in the spotlight. I will show you what I mean by showing 2 pictures of how you can display the  whole guitar. Keep it simple and only show the electric guitar without any distraction in the background.

If you are planning to put in an ad for something I hope you have got some tips on how you can display an item. Use lots of light and take pictures from a unique angle. Create interest!

Bag for Tamron 150-600mm

I have found the bag that fits Tamron 150-600 mm with additional lenses and the camera house. The bag is called Lowepro Pro Runner 300 AW.

I wanted the following features when I was searching for a camera bag;

– fit Tamron 150-600 mm lens attached to the camera house
– not to big bag
– fit few more things in the bag than just the Tamron and the camera house
– inbuilt waterproof material
– be able to have a tripod attached to the bag
– well protected

Finally I found the Lowepro Pro Runner 300 AW that fulfilled all the features I wanted.

These are the technical specifications:

Internal Dimensions: 28.5 x 11.5 x 38.5 cm (11.22 x 4.53 x 15.16 in)

External Dimensions: 33 x 19 x 44 cm (12.99 x 7.48 x 17.32 in)

Weight: 1.4 kg (3.08 lbs)

As you can see from the above pictures I can fit the camera house on the Tamron 150-600 lens with the hood. I can also fit 4 other lenses and a flash. If I remove the 2 last walls that is below the Tamron 150-600 mm lens I can fit even longer lenses in this bag. So it is a bag that can be used for many kinds of lenses. When I am outdoors and I want to take the camera house and the attached Tamron 150-600mm  I can easily do this with this bag.

The bag comes with a inbuilt raincoat and it has a tripod pouch at the bottom of the bag to put the tripod and then attach it to the bag on the top as well.

I will write more about the alternative bags that can be useful for Tamron 150-600 mm or any other similar size lens in another article. In that case you have more bags to choose from. If you have any questions about this bag just ask.
